Bare shell to bombshell: 1971 HQ Holden Kingswood

Les Seach is more than just a car enthusiast, he is an artist, and his canvas is a classic car, the 1971 Holden HQ Kingswood. It began as a bare shell, which he then transformed into a striking example of automotive craftsmanship, showing the impressive heritage of the Holden HQ and his passion for cars.

A brief history

The Holden HQ Kingswood was first introduced in 1971 and is one of Australia’s most iconic classic cars. Known for its modern look and new suspension system, it was a reliable vehicle for city and long countryside trips. The Holden HQ remained in production until 1974 and has become a popular restoration project for many car enthusiasts due to its part in Australia’s automotive history.

Bringing back the glory

Before all the modifications and restoration, Seach’s 1971 Holden HQ was a bare shell stripped of remnants of its former glory. However, where some might have been put off by the amount of work needed for this restoration project, Seach saw potential. His decision to purchase the Kingswood was driven by a deep affection for the HQ model, a classic car he describes as “plain and not overdone”, the perfect foundation for an extraordinary personal project.

A labour of love

The transformation of this Kingswood was no small feat and went beyond just aesthetics. Seach equipped the car with a blown small block Chevy engine to further boost its already impressive road performance. It’s also been implemented with a mini tubbed 4-link near suspension setup to accommodate the new engine power. The tyres have been upgraded to 20×10 rear with 19×8 front billet intros, complementing the car’s classic looks.

The modifications significantly improved the Holden HQ’s performance, enhancing tyre traction for more precise handling and making the ride even smoother.

A love for Holden HQs

Showing off at classic car shows and winning awards can be rewarding, especially after putting all the hard work into a restoration project. Still, they’re not what fueled this car enthusiast. Les Seach confesses he “just loves doing it”.

The joy of building and the satisfaction that comes from taking something ordinary and making it extraordinary with his own hands. It’s all about the passion and love which is evident in every inch of the transformed HQ Holden.
